We have self-propelled wheelchairs, manual push wheelchairs, all-terrain/ beach wheelchairs and 4-wheeler mobility scooters available to hire. Wheeled walkers are available on a loan basis. All of our scooters have backpacks/ stickholders.
All of our mobility equipment is fully insured for use in the UK.
User manuals are provided. All mobility scooters have small baskets fitted to their steering columns.
Mobility equipment must be stored securely overnight, preferably indoors or protected from the weather. Access to electricity supply required for overnight charging of scooters.
The DAG office is closed Wednesdays and weekends. If you wish to hire a mobility scooter or wheelchair on a Sunday, arrangements must be made for collections/ delivery/ returns on the Friday or Monday.
Proof of ID is required when collecting equipment.
A Terms & Conditions of Hire Form must be completed when hiring mobility scooters.
Free delivery/collection available in Whitby town where possible, depending on availibility of volunteers. Deliveries/ collections can be arranged to addresses outside of the town and will be subject to charges depending on the distance.
Manual push wheelchairs, self-propelling wheelchairs and mobility scooters ARE NOT suitable to take on to the sand at the beach, and MUST NOT come into contact with the sea water.
The maximum ranges quoted can be achieved in ideal conditions i.e. flat, even pavement and road surfaces. The hilly streets around Whitby, uneven or cobbled road surfaces, and the weight of the user will affect the maximum battery range.

DAG has self-propelled wheelchairs andt attendant push wheelchairs from Roma Medical, Drive Medical, Casa Move, Electric Mobility, Medicare, Invacare and Days Medical.
All are suitable for use by adults.The self propelled wheelchairs can be pushed by a carer/ attendant as well as by the wheelchair user.
The maximum user weight limit for all of the wheelchairs is 18stone/ 114 kilos. The standard seat width is 18" / 45cms. One of the attendant push wheelchairs has a 20" / 50cms width seat and the Casa Move self-propel chair has a 16"/ 40cms width, which is suitable for smaller adults and older children.
The wheelchairs are transportable; they fold flat, have detachable arm rests and adjustable/ detachable footrests. Hand operated brakes are fitted on the rear wheels or on the handles. All of the wheelchairs have slightly padded seats or cushions and are fitted with seatbelts. Some of the self propelled chairs have quick release back wheels.
The Enigma and Days Lite wheelchairs are made of lightweight aluminium.
Also available - detachable elevated leg rests.
We have one Hippocampe all-terrain wheelchair, which is suitable for use on the beach, rocky shores and in the countryside.
The Hippocampe is suitable for children (2yrs +) and young adults or adults of smaller stature. The wheelchair is designed to be pushed by an attendant/ carer. The wheelchair user should not be left unattended.
The Hippocampe is a purpose built lightweight medium size manual wheelchair, suitable for adults and children (from 2 years old). When fitted with balloon wheels, the chair can be taken into the water as it will float. The chair has a fold-down seat back, removable push bar and detachable wheels, is easy to steer, can be assembled quickly, weighs 17kg (without accessories).
The user weight limit is 20 stone/ 120 kilos.
It has padded upholstery, leg support, brake adjustable height back rest, adjustable armrests which lift up for ease of transfer from side. Infil panels, a headrest and a harness can give extra support and security. An additional Supracor cushion gives improved pelvic stability and pressure relief.
15/05/2025 - Balloon wheels can be fitted for use on soft sand, but are unavailable at this time, as we are waiting for a replacement part.

Four days - £25; Five days - £30; Six days - £35.

Foreshore: £2 per hour/ £6 per session (up to 3 hours)
DAG office: One day - £10; Two days - £20; Three days - £30; Four days - £40; Five to seven days - £50. No deposit required.
Up to three hours - £12; Three hours plus - £19
Two days - £37; Three days - £54; Four days - £70
Five days - £80; Six days - £90; Seven days - £100
